Thanks jsbutton, that helped a lot.
It's been a deadly circle for me, I wanted wireless internet, to get wireless I had to install the madwifi driver, that needed sharutils, which needed apt, which needed an internet connection, which was supposed to be wireless. Anyway, having recompiled the kernel to get the LAN working (after several attempts), it's connected, followed your instructions, got apt, got sharutils, got the driver working, got wireless, and now can get rid of the LAN and am happy

Thank you!
Slava.
