FC3-- Can't Dial-Up to Internet
Dear All:
Sorry if this question sounds to basic. I guess I am used to using Windows and things are a little different in linux. My first time here. I successfully installed FC3 using the 4 .iso files from some ftp server on AMD Athlon machine. I am trying to connect to the internet but I am having some problems which I hope you can help. After installing FC3 I tried configuring a Dial-Up Connection Manually as well as using the Fedora Core internet Configuration Wizard but no luck. I fill-out all the required information, including the ISP, telephone number, username and password. When I finished a new ppp0 entry in the Network Configuration window gets created. When I clicked the 'Activate' button, it changes from Inactive to Active. Also from the command-line when typed # /sbin/ifup myppp or # /sbin/ifdown myppp,.... the status changes from 'Active to Inactive' BUT I DO NOT HEAR ANY modem dialing sound. NOW What?????????????????? When I click the Activate/Deactivate button, is it supposed to dial and try to connect or do I need to do anything else? I looked through all the options but I could not see an internet connection option. Thank you all. -c |
Did you actually listen to the phone to see if its dialing, or just assume it isnt because you don't hear the computer doing it.

Might as well make it to the big question. What brand and model is your modem?
Does FC3 see it in hardware browser? Lets hope its not a winmodem. Things a company will do to save $5.00. Brian1 |
No dial tone.
I listened on the phone and do not hear anything. Checked everything, cables and all. It worked fine when I had XP installed. what Am I doing wrong? |

Brian1,
here is the modem info: SinglePoint 56Kbps V.90 Fax Modem which according to http://hardware.linuxfaqs.de/entry.php?tab=peri&id=1557 is fully supported. Now, I am assuming that does FC3 see it in hardware browser. Correct me if I am wrong, but when you login as root and use the ifup and ifdown command it actually activates and diactivates. The problem is that I do not hear anything or does anything after that. -C |
