Unhappy fatal error - grub cant be written to hd0

I am trying to install ubuntu on my wifes computer. I plan a dual boot system with 2 sata drives. Windows is installed on the first drive. I plan to install linux on the second. The grub installer tries to write to the mbr on hd0, which doesn't exist. I can change the default location in advanced settings, but I don't know where he mbr lives (sd0, sd1, ...) Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank You

Oh, hd0 exists all right. Grub doesn't know, or care, about the difference between P-ATA and S-ATA drives. The first one is hd0, the next hd1 ...

Find out why the write is failing; BIOS virus protection maybe, or ...

You can install to the (root) partition and chain-load from Windoze - works best from Vista.

I just rechecked the bios, I don't see any antivirus or boot sector protection. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thank You
