You will probably see a speed increase, but don't expect to have a lightning fast pc out of the box. Some distros are lighter than others and will load more quickly. It also depends on which and how many services you have running, the type of desktop you run (Fluxbox is lighter than KDE) and a few other things.

My recommendation is to pick a distro you can work with and then to research how to make it lighter and to speed it up.

It depends on which "speed" you mean: dnetc or 3D games will certainly not be faster; however, if you are running several servers with hundreds of threads, you might probably see an increase in performance.
And of course, like XavierP already said, an operating system that doesn't waste dozens of MiB RAM for the GUI and significant amounts of CPU time for stupid menu animations that no one needs will be faster :)

You might want to consider a fast linux distribution and/or a
fast GUI window manager. From what I read, fast distributions
are slackware and gentoo with debian not too far behind.
Fast window manager might be Xfe and window manger (sp?)
[and definitely not KDE and GNOME]. Distributions, that use
little disk space might be Damm Small Linux, Vector Linux, etc.
Puppy linux might be a good one for newbies whom want a
small distribution (a compromise between small and user-friendly).

Do a search for "which distribution" on this forum and you'll
find alot. This topic been beaten to death.
