Failure to install Linux from Windows ME
 

Thank you frieza for your help.
I downloaded DOS 6.0 as you suggested
and there is an MSCDEC driver which
enables me to read from the CD ROM Drive.
However, the Dos does not support AUTORUN
and there are no executable files on the
CD-ROM so I still cannot get the CD-ROM
to load anything.
Any further ideas?

It looks like there's a past history involved here, and this post may be in the wrong place...? :)

Anyway, from the sound of it I don't understand why you can't just install Linux from the CD-ROM after setting your BIOS to boot from the CD-ROM, no DOS involved. Then you could install a dual-boot Windows ME/Linux system from there.

Maybe I don't understand what the issue, is, though. :confused:

Just go to the FTP and grab base.i, install.1, and install.2

Then use rawrite like this:
Insert first floppy
Start->Run, Command

C:\Windows\Desktop> rawrite base.i a
...
...
Insert floppy number 2
C:\Windows\Desktop> rawrite install.1 a
...
...
Insert floppy number 3
C:\Windows\Desktop> rawrite install.2 a

Exit the command prompt.

OK, now restart your system with the base.i floppy in the floppy drive. Now when it greets you, simply press enter. When you ARE PROMPTED, put in install.1 floppy and press enter. When prompted again, put install.2 floppy in and hit enter. Now type in root, and hit enter. Welcome to linux prompt!

Now you can set up your partions and install Slackware. Refer to http://Slackware.com for details of this part.

I assumed that you have trouble as either Don't know what BIOS is/how to change it OR your bios doesn't boot CD's.
