"failed to stat" what does it actually mean?

% pwd
pwd: failed to stat `.': Stale NFS file handle

What is "stat"? I've always wondered this and it bugs me

stat is a service routine in Linux that gives the calling routine information about a file. Stat pulls this information from an inode in the file system. Here is the man page explanation of stat:
