Failed to obtain authentication.

I'm absolutely new to Linux but love my Fedora core 18 (FC18) Id love it more if I could get it to play mp3 or mp4 video. I download necessary codec or plug in and when I'm prompted to enter my password for authentication I enter the same or only pass word I have created. The same Password I use to login. It tells me sorry this didn't work.
I believe there is a su password I must use but I've never created one. Can someone walk me through it like I'm a dummy ? I know how to get into Terminal but need to know the exact command lines to use in case I need to change or add a su password.
Thankyou in advance for any lesson you can give me. Mark

I'm not a regular Fedora user but have installed it a number of times and have always been asked to create a root password during the installation. The link below is to the Fedora installation guide, section 9.15.1: Set the Root Password.

http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/...llation_Guide/

Additionally, at the fedora project site (link below) it states specifically: Setting up a root password is a mandatory part of a Fedora installation. If you forget or otherwise lose your root password, there are procedures to reset it.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_t..._root_password

Go to the link and information is available on how to reset your root password.

Fedora, as a policy, does not distribute any copyright or patent protected software. There is a site (RPM Fusion) that does provide several programs and codecs that you might find helpful. Once you've followed the instructions for doing so, the various RPM tools (e.g., YUM, yumex, apper, smart, etc.) can be used to install and maintain whatever you install.

<edit>
By the way, the Fedora project dropped the "core" from the name several years ago when the core and application repositories were merged into the "Everything" one. The c in the kernel names is nostalgia, and, perhaps, a nod to the fact that the kernel is the "core" of the system.

just a bit of "nit picking"

there is no OS called "fedora Core 18"
the very LAST "core" was "Fedora Core 6"

It is just plane old "Fedora 18 " -- NO core part

as per fedora's directive
It will NEVER ship with NON free non gpl'ed software
not even java or flash, not Mp3

see Mjmwired's guide page
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f18.html

then you have a MAJOR problem !!!

During the install fedora HAD YOU make a root password ,and had you type it in TWICE.

fedora uses "su" and "su -"
it dose NOT use "sudo" by default

you need to type in the root password that you set up at the time of install

yes you did , you typed it in twice at the time of install
you also read a WARNING about forgetting it

for that you must install patent and / or royalty encumbered software
mp3 is not a GPL software
"Windows Media Video" ( .wmv ) is owned and patented by Microsoft
it also uses mpeg
Mpeg is enforced by the MpegLa
HD tv "x264" is enforced by the MpegLa

basically to watch 99.999999% of movies and listen to 99.9999999% of music
patent royalties and licensing fees MUST be paid

or
bypass the USPTO
and install the software from a NON US of A operated server

This is why fedora "out of the box " has NO support for almost ALL music and video formats

you have to install them separately

this is all explained on the Fedora wiki
and in the fedora documentation
