Failed new install after successful Live CD start-up, need help
Hello
I have been attempting to install Ubuntu 9.04 from a CD I burned from a download. I checked the disk using the option on the welcome screen menu in the installer, no errors were found. I was able to get the Live version running after some T & E with video output (didn't like VGA/VRT, worked with DVI/LCV). Had some issues with the display in the Live run (resolution too low, tried to reset to different resolution, got weird, but readable view), but was able to run the install program. Did 2 partitions with Guided install. Installer finished, said was successful. When rebooted went through POST, then displayed following lines:
kernel alive
kernel direct mapping tables...
then a blank screen with nothing (no cursor). The HD stays active for about 20 or 30 seconds, then stops. The monitor does not go into power saving mode.
Ran find /boot/grub/menu.lst, which returned (hd0,0)
This is a new install on an empty HD.
hardware is as follows
Gigabye GA-MA78GPM-DS2H Rev. 1.0 (this has the 780G chipset)
AMD Athlon X2 5600 CPU
WD 640 GB HD (Model WD6400AAKS) on SATA 0
Asus Blu-ray drive model BC 1206PT on SATA 1
Viewsonic N2750w 27" LCD monitor (running off on-board DVI)
What recommendations does anyone have for next steps to take? In the meantime I'll try running other diagnostics (e.g., contents of menu.lst).
I'm thinking this might be a video problem. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Mike H
