Failed dependencies

I'm completely stumped by failed dependencies. Every time I get this message from rpm, I go and download another rpm which should satisfy the requirement. I then get it again. Earlier I was trying to install the gcc3 rpm and went through the failed dependency process until I got to kernel headers. Kernel headers told me I needed gcc.

It's cyclical; is that the word I'm looking for?

I've trying doing --nodeps but either it installs and doesn't work, or it refuses anyway.

I can install nothing.

this may not be the answer you were looking for, but i think i had a lot of the same problems you did. i had some other distro (mdk 9.0) that demanded a whole bunch of dependencies concerning libraries that weren't installed. i found this immensely irritating, so i tried slackware, as people claimed it was reliable and stable.

lo and behold, it was. it's the best choice i've made in the past 6 months. with a minimal install of slack 9, i never have any problems with dependencies.

y-p...

Thanks for the reply.

Slackware...I didn't know they were still around. I will consider that, definitely, if and when I do a reinstall. I hate the idea of doing that though because I finally got all my servers running properly.

Thanks again,
Dale
