Extremely slow Data transfer to Samba shares, USB Drives, NTFS Partitions
 
I am trying to setup an old Toshiba Satellite 2410 for work. Trouble is, data transfer be it of any kind is extremely slow. Writing to Samba shares maxs out at 1MBPS (on Gigabit Ethernet), writing a 700MB file to a USB Stick/PenDrive takes half an hour, it takes a similar amount of time to write to a NTFS Partition too, to make matters worse writing large files to NTFS Partitions leads to continuous 100% CPU Utilization!

The laptop had Windows XP installed initially and all of the above were working much much faster.

Debian 6 running stock Kernel (2.6.32-5-686).

^bump^

I've noticed that USB Reads & Writes (even those to NTFS partitions on the same hard disk as /) seem to max out at 1mbps. Writes to Samba shares are better off with speed upto 5mpbs (on a gigabit LAN).

is there anything that can be done to improve this?
