External (USB) LG DVD RAM

Hi there I'm a new girl to the Linux scene and am finding the endless possibilities wonderful! However, I have hit a snag and would really appreciate help!

I bought an external LG DVD RAM drive shortly before I migrated across to Linux and have not been able to find a way to get it to work for DVD RAM, although it works fine for all other media.

I don't want to go in blind and not be able to use it for anything else, as part of my reason for buying it is that my internal drive doesn't write to DVD at all. Unfortunately, I just don't know which way to go with it. I only want to use it for backup with DVD RAM to avoid using DVD-/+RW as they don't seem to hold the data very well and I have lost some things as a result of backing up to them.

I am using Debian Etch 4.0-r1 with the most up to date kernel available at this time (30/08/07)

If anyone can help I would be really grateful :-)

Hi shelly-girl, Welcome to lq. Could you post the model # so we can look it up? Here is an LG model that is working.

I'm not sure if they're similar or not.
Good luck. ;-)

In addition to peacedogs suggestions ...

What is the output of
Code:

lsmod
dmesg | grep -i dvd

Cheers,
Tink
