external modem not initializing

Using Redhat Linux server v. 2.9 on a Dell server. US Robotics business class external modem. Modem was detected at startup and I checked the configure option. 98% sure it ws setup on /dev/ttyS1. When I launch Minicom the staus in the lower right is OFFLINE. I can't do anything that makes life come to the modem. It does show two indicater lights on the front panel of the modem. I am very green to Linux and I don't what I should try next.

Try /dev/ttyS0, /dev/ttyS2, and /dev/ttyS3. Then you can be either 100% sure it was /dev/ttyS1 or your modem will initialize.
