External Modem not Detected

Hi, I am newbie and have installed Redhat 8.0 and have been fiddling with it for about 4 weeks.

I have a problem with my USR 56k Message Modem (external). When I setup a new dial-up connection, my modem isn't detected. I tried selecting a generic modem on ttyS0 and was able to connect to my ISP.

When I tried to add a new dial-up connection (ppp1) to another ISP, I just couldn't make a connection. It seems that the modem isn't working. I tried deleting all dial-up connections and making a new one and still couldn't make a connection.

What seems to be the problem?
