External Hard drive problem

I have a Toshiba Satelite pro450 running Ubuntu 11.04 i want to use an external HDD which is a 500GB in an aftermarket case i have formatted the drive in Disk utility but it does not appear anywhere apart from disk utility what do i have to do to use this drive , i have another external drive which works absolutely fine.

Are you sure that it is actually mounted?

Thanks i have now sorted my prob out i think its my fault being unfamiliar with ubuntu im still learning
