I was just about to recommend that Toshiba you have just bought!

I have a slightly earlier model which works perfectly in Linux, Windows etc.

Meanwhile, I went out and got me a 3TB WD My Passport and set it to ext4, 755. Xmass present to meself. Good Job, bet it wasn't as hard as you may have thought it'd be.
