export contacts and email back to "Windows Mail" from Ubuntu
 

Taking all Contacts and Emails temporarily back to Windows for safety - whilst I install Mint in place of Ubuntu

Using Thunderbird. I have checked the help files and checked Google

There is prbably a simple answer - but it eludes this fella.

Any help would be appreciated

Well since now you'll be going with the Mint, I strongly recommend that you check out whether you are fully satisfied with Mint's performance, i.e. whatever you need is properly working there and you can do that by using the Mint Live CD.

Yes - I have had Mint before and it seemed ok - hate the insipid green desktop and Icons, but all that can be changed. I still have the disk here somewhere. There are a few thing that I am worried about. Will it do all the same functions as UBUNTU. Does it use the same drop down menus etc. Some questions I have for down the track may need another thread, but I guess that will be your call. Can I run OpenBVE on it successfully and so on. But I'll be more specific when I get to a problem. For now I am in the back up mode and concerned about data

If I see such a thread from any person on the LQ forum, my prompt answer will be "Why not go ahead and try a LIVE CD and check things out for yourself ?" because that's what the LIVE CD's are meant for !

Secondly, if you don't have an internet connection at your home OR having a big download is not feasible for you then you need to mention this fact in your first post and then the members here (who have some experience with Mint) might shed some light on the issue.

If some old version of [Distro X] was stable and worked flawlessly, it is not necessary that the newer version will also behave the same way.

and thirdly, if you have full faith in that old Mint version then why risk yourself with the newer one ? Why not install the same oldie Mint version ?

FYI, I am no one to decide whether and when you should create new threads for specific questions. That is entirely up to you.

1 I'm happy to use the same old version
2 I do have the internet at home and will be swapping to a better provider just as soon as my current credit runs out. There should be no problems with large downloads.
3 I agree

As far as a new thread goes if needed - you may not be able to make the decision with authority, yet I am quite sure you will put in your opinion should I have too many subjects running. Anyway I will appreciate your input if you are around. And I will make the decision - whether to take notice or not.

Which particular problem is that

I have been thinking of that, but I want to give MINT a good trial run from the live disk - and make up my mind after that. I have to travel in the next few days so I won't get chance to do this until I get back. Although I will have this laptop with me and I can go online anyplace that there is mobile phone coverage - we'll see how we go :)

Oh that problem - well I'm on line in Ubuntu - so I guess I must have :) My grandson in law fixed it when I was in Brisbane; I've got no idea how he did it. Thankyou for pointing that out - I will get his solution from him, then post it in that thread and mark it solved. But it will take at least 2 to 3 weeks

That was a joke. If it would have been serious, I would have simply vanished without notice.

That's good! Evidentally Linux Mints main difference to ubuntu is that it comes with flash and media codecs pre installed, But in Ubuntu 10.10 there is support for adding these restricted extras during the normal install anyway. So Mint is sing it's edge ?

That problem was related to Mint Gloria, that's why I asked.

The solution I will be getting only applies to Dodo in Australia. I don't know if there is a special version of Ubuntu for Australia, but my copy came with most of the phone companies set up (except for Dodo)
