Explanation of Dual-Boot

Hey all! Weird question: would someone mind explaining that two OSes (XP and Mandrake 10) installed in a dual boot (Lilo) situation on two separate partitions cannot cause each other to crash or somehow interfere with each other and why?

Because they are on different partitions if you have two partitions and you download a file to one partition its not gonna put the same file on both partitions. Harddrives have partition tables which tell the harddrive where partitions start and end so they dont mess with each other.
