Explain wine for me
 

Okay. I don't know if there are many people this generous out there, but I'll make the request anyway. I'm completly new to linux. I mean like days new. I've been running windows for as long as I can remember. I'm running Redhat 9.0 (which is awesome) but i'm still new to the whole linux thing. It is different from what I'm used too. I was hoping that someone who knew Redhat well, and wine. To walk me through the process of installing it. I installed a package wine-20030508-1rh.....rpm something or other. I don't know where to go from there. People keep telling me about creating a fake windows folder or something but the mumbo jumbo confuses me. My birthday is coming up. (May 28th in fact!) so could someone help me with this? :rolleyes:

Avoid Wine if you don't need it. I'm a Wine developer, so I don't say that lightly. Many, many newbies turn to Wine within the first few weeks of starting out with Linux, because they think it offers them a shallower learning curve, "by using all my old Windows software I'll feel right at home!" - well no, it doesn't work like that. Wine is cool if you need it, ie you need apps with no native equivalents. Otherwise take some time out to explore the native alternatives.

Wine is currently quite hard to setup correctly, and not everything works well with it. If you really need it, I'd suggest you buy CodeWeavers CrossOver which is a Wine-made-easy style product.

I could not agree more. Although I realize this is not what you asked, you may want to ask yourself what Winblow$ program it is that you need to run. I am a relative newcomer to Linux, and have found that there is nothing that I need that I cannot do in Linux. Of course, YMMV.

There is a patch for Red Hat 8 and 9 that make it support mp3. The only reason they didn't include the support is they were afraid of lawsuits. run a google/linux search for xmms mp3 redhat and you can find the rpm for it.
