Exiting X server to install nvidia driver

This is my first time ever using linux, i have mandrake 9.1 installed on my computer and im trying to resolve a shifted screen problem by installing the nvidia driver for my video card. The installation instructions say to exit the X server and boot to console then go to the directery where you downloaded it and run the command. My question is i have no idea how to exit the X server and boot to console nore do i even know what the X server is. Im as green as they come. If anyone could tell me how to go through this process so i could install the driver I would greatly appreciate it. Or if anyone know where a tutorial is that would be good to.

Thanks
Fred
