Exiting x in debian sarge-GNOME

I am trying to setup the nvidia driver from their webpage and in the process for this I have to exit out of x and all open GL applications. I don't see any options for this anywhere in the GUI and I can't find it in google either. I assume it must be obvious but I am not seeing it. Can anyone help me out?

as root

/etc/init.d/gdm stop

and then to restart

/etc/init.d/gdm start

hope this helps

That's assuming you're running gdm. You may be running kdm (part of kde) or plain old xdm in which case substitute the appropriate display manage name instead of gdm.
