Question Exiting window managers crashes video

I'm having problems when exiting window managers.

"startx" works just fine, but whenever I want to exit the window manager to go back to the CLI, the video driver (i'm guessing) crashes. The screen just goes black and I am unable to do anything, which forces me to restart the machine. I was having trouble with KDE to begin with until I disabled composite extension.

The board and APU is an ASUS E35M1-I Fusion AMD E-350 APU (1.6GHz, Dual-Core).

Have you tried the key combination ctl-alt-F1? Does it bring you to a virtual terminal? (cli interface). Have you checked the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to see if there were any errors on exiting the gui?
