.exe files with Linpus Lite

Hi,

I am quite new to Linux (have only done what I have been told to do on it before) and have just got the Acer Aspire One with Linpus Lite. There are several things that I am not able to do, I hope it's ok to ask about them all here :s

- I have downloaded msn and antivirus stuff and now have .exe files but I don't know how to run them, if i click on them I get a message saying it can't do it.
- I need to be able to connect with the computers at my university and it doesn't seem to recognise ssh (it probably doesn't help that I have forgotten the rest of what I would normally use to log in via unix!)
- I don't know how to write .txt files and compile them using LaTex.

I hope that this isn't too much for one post and that I haven't repeated what other people have asked before, sorry if I have!

Thanks :)

You can't install exe files in linux, but it is possible to run them using wine

Do you use ssh to connect, or do you need another protocol?

There is a multiprotocol messenger on the Aspire that allows you to connect on MSN, Yahoo and other networks, there's no need to install MSN. Just run the program called Messenger under the connect menu.

Also, no need to install anti virus stuff, it's not needed with Linux.

To use ssh, just open up a terminal (right click on the desktop and choose terminal. Then run ssh from the command line.

Hi, thanks guys :)

I have downloaded wine but it says something along the lines of 'can't find the module' when i try to run the .exe files.

Also, I have tried to connect to msn via the desktop thing but it says that it is lacking a protocol and won't let me connect.

What are you trying to run under Wine? Not all Windows programs will work under Wine.

On the MSN problem, just run the live update. It'll take an age, but once it's done you'll be able to log on.

Thanks everyone,

I ran the live update and now I can use messenger fine :D

The .exe I was trying to run with wine was for antivirus, but I think I will just ignore it for now! :)

In wine you have to install the programmes before you can use them. You cannot take the executable from a collection of files related to a programme and expect it to run under linux. Some programmes just don't work in wine, even though you have installed them, because some libraries are missing. Moreover, if you would be able to run antivirus programmes from windows under wine they would not protect your linux OS.

And as said by other posters, you don't need antivirus in linux. But if you want to have some, try ClamAv.
