.dll = ?

Linux doesn't have extensions that will mark file can name it anything you like.

In addition what makes a file executable are its permissions. For a program to run its executable attribute needs to be set. The following is some info on file permissions:

hmmm... why is this thread in "networking" section?
Whatever... only Windoze is stoopid enought to recognize a file by its extension. Most linux/Mac OS/Unix/Any OSes but Win applications are bright enought to find out what is what (or if it can't it should be the user's job to tell the system).
