It would be very easy if you had another HDD for her XP. Do you have one?

let your wife have xp on the hard drive.....when you want to run linux insert a live cd....theres lots of good ones you can check out www.distrowatch.com

xp is recent 2001 so most modern live cds should boot it.
if you have 1G of ram....you can load the cd into ram and be faster.

Learn to negotiate with your wife...there are lots of info on why you can be more secure with linux....but ask you if MS has a live cd?

This is not true. It is pure Microsoft propaganda. Windows XP is a legacy OS. Don't buy into their lies!

Also, you could install Xubuntu on a separate partition and GRUB should automatically detect Windows. If not, just set GRUB up.

During the XP setup, create a few at least 3 partitions which will be called C(size is up to you and depends on what you want to install), D(around 8gigs will do for a full install) and E(500mb to a gig). Then continue installing XP onto the C drive.

Once that is done, stick in your linux disk and reboot the PC. During the setup, you can then format drive D into /, your root drive for linux and format E as a swap drive. During the installation, it'll detect your XP partition and ask if you want to add it to the boot manager and for the sake of your wife, you might want to set XP as the default boot partition.

Then every time you boot your PC, the boot manager will load up with a list of OS'es to pick from and if none are chosen within about 5 seconds, the default will be booted.

Resize your partition, leave an unformatted space on your hd, boot form XP disc and install in that space.
Then configure your boot manager, make ntfs partitions viewable from GNU/Linux and so on.

Is your current drive large enough for both Linux and Windows? If it is install XP first and add Linux.

In case you want to keep your existing Linux installation and have another hard drive:
1. Disconnect Linux drive, connect new drive as first IDE master, install Windows on it.
2. Put back your Linux drive, connect Windows drive as slave, add Windows to GRUB menu.
