Evolution opens then instantly closes itself again

Evolution was working properly but now whenever I try to open it the program opens, flashes up on the screen then disappears. If I click on the little envelope at the top of the screen I can get both the compose new message screen and also the contacts to open, but not the main mail program. If I open the contacts screen and click on the mail button to switch to it that way, the program instantly disappears again.
I have also tried applications/office/evolution but that has the same result.
What do I try next?
Andrea

Open a terminal window and start Evolution that way.
Code:

evolution
You should see some messages in the terminal window. Some of the messages should help you to find the problem. If you need more help post the messages that you see here.

Hi. I typed evolution into the terminal and got the following reply
EI: MAIL PREFSSegmentation fault

Still no idea what is going on but at least the system thinks there is a fault too!

Go into your home directory, make sure your file manager is set to display hidden files. Find the folder .evolution and rename it something like .evolution-bak. That should allow it to start, your configuration will be reset and emails won't show up though.

I don't know much about Evolution, so I'm not sure how to import your emails from the backup, but I'm sure someone here does.

I have the same problem. I got it working by disabling the plugins.
Code:

evolution --disable-eplugin
This problem occurred, in my case, by installing gnome-documents. I will either use Evolution without the plugins or uninstall gnome-documents.
