evolution does connect to internet

Hello
I just installed Debian and cannot get Evolution to connect to the internet.
The File/work on line button is grayed out, also the icon in the lower left.
What connection should i look for?
Thanks Cliff

See this link, it is step by step howto set up Evolution. You will know the names of the pop and smtp servers. That should be available from your ISP.

Thanks camorri

I checked the url and made sure all the steps were followed.
When opening Evolution it is still indicates it is off line.
Thanks

A few questions.

Do other internet programs work? Firefox?

Do you have a proxy?

Are you running a firewall? This may have it blocked.

repo 06-13-2011 01:58 PM

Are you using network manager for the connection?
Seems there is a bug with network manager and evolution.
http://lists.mandriva.com/bugs/2011-02/msg00095.php
Do you have the latest evolution?
Try to remove network manager and use wicd.

Kind regards

Hi,

I've been using Evolution 2.32.3 (and previous versions) for a couple of months with Linux Mint Debian Edition (Debian testing) in combination with NetworkManager (0.8.4) without any problems. Going through the responses in the bug pointed out by repo, it seems to work for that user when he connects using wireless, yet fails when using cable.

As asked before, do your other internet programs work, chat, browser, ...

Kind regards,

Eric

HI camorri
Empathy and iceweasel work just fine
No I am not running a firewall yet, just installed on my desktop.
I do not have a proxy that I know of.

Hi repo
No network manager that I know of. Installed Squeeze 6 from iso.
as second operating system the other sys is Ubuntu Natty. they are both 64 bit.

Hi EricTRA
I have been using Evolution for several years with Ubuntu and wanted to take a look at Debian.
Grub would be the only manager other than Nautilus

thanks for the time

Can you try installing Thunderbird, and configure it to see if you can get it working. Then we'll know if it the Evolution or some other problem.

cliffm 06-13-2011 11:33 PM

camorri
Debian equivelent to Thunderbird is icedove. Loaded this up and instantly retrived my email.
Still prefere Evolution as my client.
I must have a switch some where that is not in the proper place.
