everything is too big

Hi
I must have clicked on something - and it must have been something simple because i didn't go deeply into the system or anything - and now everything is too big on the screen. Even when i start the computer, the login screen is twice the size, and then the toolbars, the icons, the internet, everything has become magnified to about twice the size it was. I can't work out how to get it back to normal, or what actually happened.

You haven't mentioned which Distribution you are using. From personal experience, Ubuntu has an accessibility mode for visually handicapped people who require the object to be larger in their display. Search the net on how to turn that off. This may not be the case here, but no harm checking it out.

You might have changed you screen resolution by mistake.

Sorry I'm using ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron
I've checked screen resolution - it's on 960x600. That's the highest, and if i pick something lower and apply it, everything gets even bigger.
There's a thing in preferences for assistive technologies but I have never enabled it.

this seemed to happen around the time i went into preferences/appearance/themes to change the colour scheme. I don't think i touched anything else. I've since tried all the themes out to see if i can get things back to normal but it hasn't made any difference.

hi,

sounds like your DPI settings got changed, iam on a Windows machine at the moment and so i dont have the exact menu options,
these links may be of help
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=711012
http://kevin.vanzonneveld.net/techbl...een_using_dpi/
Have a look around the System>Preference>Font or display related menus, DPI settings are somewhere there.

gud luck

There used to be a keyboard shortcut that comes with compiz that magnifies the screen. I was quite puzzled myself the first time I accidentally hit those keys. It doesn't sound as if that is your problem, though, as part of the screen would be out of scope.

Editing xorg.conf is certainly not a newbie thing but maybe you can post the contents of the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf for everyone's benefit? That may provide some clues if any accidental config changes affected anything. Also what is the Max resolution supported by your monitor (not as per screen resolution but as per your monitor's hardware specs)?
