everything hangs when enabling monitor mode

I'm using BackTrack 4 Final Release VMWare Image with VM workstation 7 host machine is windows 7
the wireless card I'm using is a Alfa awus036h when I do "airmon-ng" says the rtl8187 driver is being used
My problem is when put the interface into monitor mode using "airmon-ng start wlan0" it hangs and doesn't do anything I can even press Ctrl + C but nothing happens everything worked fine until now. I'm pretty new to linux and this is giving me gray hairs

Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi your my only hope

You make it sound like you HAD this working once, which is pretty amazing. You are posting to LQ, but you have VMware and Windows 7 in the stack - I am going to go out on a limb and say "you don't have a Linux problem."

Make sure BT say this thing will do wireless. Problems like infinite hang show up if the wireless card won't support promiscuous mode. If the card is on the BT/airmon approved list, it is still possible that Windows won't support the mode with standard drivers. Lastly, can you back up 2 steps and run a BT "live" CD to get it to fly on this system?
