Every Time I try to load Linux the Moniter d/c's and shutsdown
 

a long time ago my fried tried to get me into useing linux be lending a Knoppix std disc, so i put it in and whatched it boot up and everytime my moniter would power down and turn off. so that it it more my linux ness, but the i decied to try again with red hat, the same thing would happen when i tried to install it with the graphics but it would do the same thing it did for knoppix, so i had to do it the text, and now evey time i try to run it it boots everything up and my moneiter disconnects, can someone please help me this is very agrovating.

Look up the Horizontal and Vertical Refresh rates for your monitor either in your manual or the Web and edit your XF86Config file, probably in /etc/X11/XF86Config, it'll be obvious where you have to replace the values if you look through the file.

You'll have to boot into text mode probably to do the editing, if ctrl+alt+F1 or F2 etc doesn't bring your monitor back to life. Do a search on the forum on how to boot straight into text mode.

There's variations on what/how to do it but getting the proper refresh rates for your monitor is probably the problem.

Are you using a newer Nvidia card? If so you need to install the drivers for linux from their site. In RH9 to boot straight into a text screen you need to feed the kernel another argument before it boots up. When you get the choice of Windows or linux you can press "a" (I think) to edit the kernal arguments. Type "single" without the quotes as the last argument in the kernal string.

yup. You probably can't use knoppix std w/ that card.... Or at least I never figured out how to.

If you download Fedora Core 1 you can bypass the requirment of upgrading the drivers. Otherwise if you want to see anything in RedHat 9 you'll need to download the linux drivers and follow the directions.

I had the exact same problem when I upgraded my card to one very similar to yours. I think it was an Nvidia FX 5200, just a different brand.

so does it really matter which one i choose? what driver did you pick, do i do all, i don't want to mess anything up.

The other two would be for intel or amd 64 bit processors, which you do not have.

Oh, and I have found that the latest version of their driver (as of yesterday) doesnt work very well for opengl. If you have the same problem, they have older drivers archived to try out. enjoy :)

alright id ownload the drivers, can some one in simple english sep by step tell me what to do? i have no idea what the nvidia read me wants me to do, and does it matter that it saved as aa text file?
