Ethernet Connection Speed Not Configuring Properly on Dell Optiplex 740 with Ubuntu
 
Hey guys, I'm having a bit of an issue with my computer. I just recently installed Ubuntu on one of my household computers, and I'm having an issue with my Ethernet Connection. I have broadband internet which is run directly to a 24 Port Ethernet Key, which is in turn connected directly to my Modem. My internet connection is rated at 100 Mbps. When I plug my Ethernet cable into the computer, the connection status says it's connected, but at 1000 Mbps, and the connection does not actually work. I have another computer, a Dell Dimension 8300, which had used that same cable before with no issues.

Any Ideas on how to fix this?

How would I go about getting that? I have no internet connection on the Ubuntu computer and the text files produced by linux can't be read on PC or MAC computers...

I don't think that posting dmesg is going to provide much of a clue, other than to show us that your Ethernet card is detecting a 1000 Mbps full duplex speed. Probably, the 24 port switch (there's no such thing called an "Ethernet key" that I know of) is set to run a 1000 Mbps even though the Internet uplink is only 100 Mbps. This is not uncommon.

What is the output of "ifconfig eth0"? ... This will tell you if your machine is getting an IP address. If it is not, how are IP addresses assigned on your network? Via DHCP? Statically? If you do have an IP address, cabn you ping other computers on your own network? If so, try pinging some an IP on the Internet (e.g. 74.125.228.52 which is what www.google.com resolves to on my system). If you can ping Intenret hosts via IP, then probably your DNS settings are messed up and you cannot resolve names.

In summary, here is a step by step checklist for how to troubleshoot problems like this:

1. Check that your Eternet interface is recognized in Linux using "ifconfig".
2. Check that your IP address, netmask, and gateway settings are correct for your network (IP address and netmask are found in the output of ifconfig, "route -n" can tell you your gateway settings.
3. Check that you can ping another host on your subnet *and* your default gateway.
4. Check that you can ping some host not on your network.
5. Check that yourt DNS name servers are set up correctly in /etc/resolv.conf.

If you work through each level of check methodologically, you will eventually find the problem. Once you have, post back here and we can suggest how to fix it.

Oh, and that switch has a small display on the side with 24 led lights. If the light is green, it's a 1000 mbps connection, and if it's orange, it's a 100 mbps connection. It will automatically detect what's an input and what's an output. The led that reads my room is green, all the others are orange. Hope this helps!

Sorry for the late reply -- extremely busy week. Have you resolved this yet?

Looking at your output, you do not have a valid IP address for your host (169.254.x.x IPs are defaults assigned when a DHCP client can't lease an address from a server). Do you have a DHCP server running on your network? If not, you'll need to assign the machine a static IP and edit /etc/sysconfig/network (at least on Debian-based systems) to have the correct statis settings. Are you the administrator of this network? If not, it might be time to go talk to whoever is responsible for it and see if (a) the DHCP server is borked or (b) what static IP settings you should use.

Ah, that's interesting, my other computer detects a DHCP server address when it's connected, this one does not. It may also help to know that the computer came from a company that had it configured to aT1 or 1Gbps connection.When I enter a static IP address it SAYS it's connected, but it doesn't actually work. Network admin's my dad, and he says the connection does have an open DHCP server. All other computers in the house connect to the connection without any issues using the DHCP. Is there any way to change the configuration from a 1 Gbps connection to a 100 Mbps connection? I've put a linksys wireless card in the computer as a temporary fix, but the connection's slow.
