ethernet check

Hi,
I am usually not at home but i have winxp and putting my box to download. but when ethernet hub or modem got dc (cable not plugged) at windows if cable is plugged in it detects and makes connection. but at linux how can i do that?
make a crontab script to check ethernet and if script detects network is gone or someting like that refresh it.

and what would you recommend as download manager(rapidshare supported noe)

If your machine uses DHCP then your DHCP client should detect the "link up" automagically and retry until it gets a lease again (or times out). If you still want extra insurance maybe check out ifplugstatus from the "ifplugd" package.
