Ethernet adapter not listed...

I posted this in the mandrake section because I'm on 9.1 right now and decided I should also post it here.

This is a problem I've had with every distro I've tried to install (gentoo, mandrake and redhat)

I have an Intel 21143-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (Generic) and it's not listed as a possible choice anywhere that I've seen and hence I can't go online on linux.

I've tried all the other "Intel" adapters and I've tried the wizard on mandrake and it sais it finds whatever I have but whatever it is that it's finding isn't connecting me to the net...

The hardware list thing in the wizard gave me this and I think it might explain something, but I dont know what

agpgart :Intel Corporation|440LX/EX - 82443LX/EX host bridge [NOT_DEFINED]
unknown : Intel Corporation|449LX/EX - 82443LX/EX host bridge [NOT_DEFINED]
tulip : DEC|DEC Chip 21142/43 [NOT_DEFINED]
unknown : Intel Corporation| 82371AB PII X4 ISA [NOT_DEFINED]
unknown : Intel Corporation| 82371AB PII X4 IDE [NOT_DEFINED]
usb-uhci : Intel Corporation| 82371AB PII X4 USB [NOT_DEFINED]
sonypi : Intel Corporation| 82371AB Bus Master IDE Controller [NOT_DEFINED]
card: Matrox Mill II Matrox II MGA 2164w (millenium II) [NOT_DEFINED]
unknown :unknown USB UHCI Root Hub (hub) [NOT_DEFINED]

For some reason all the lights show on the modem box (that its connected to the computer, recieving data, and is online and such) but it still doesnt connect as far as letting me use gaim and such.

make sure
1. router is set as a DHCP

2. PC is set as Dynamic or DHCP enabled

3. the cable connecting the PC & Router is a Patch cable and not a Cross Over cable

always check harware first
