eth0 cannot connect to dhcp
hello I hope you can help - i am having the following problem....
I have just installed redhat linux 9 it is straight out of the box and I accepted ALL the default options. But when booting up - the bit with all the OK's I get this error........ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bringing up interface eth0. Determining ip information for eth 0 failed; No link present, check cable? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ this means i cannot connect to the inet, I know there is nothing wrong with the physical connection as i can connect to the inet if i put a win98 drive in the PC. I have a 3Com (3C905B-TX) network card Any help on this matter would be very appreciated. |
And is there supposedly a DHCP server
somewhere on the other end of the network cable? |
Yes and unfortantlly its my internet connection

You might try putting in the win98 drive, going to a cmd promt and getting all the ip information. "ipconfig /all" Write down all the info and then put in the Linux drive, start up, and config the ethernet card with that data. I know that the dhcp server may have re-assigned the ip address to another box by then but it may be worth a try. If it works it may just be somethig in the config file.

I too found something that may be of interest. I did a search and found the following thread that addressess this issue: LinuxQuestions.org > Forums > Linux - Distributions > Slackware > Pcmcia errors in Slackware 9. The thread id #94958 was posted around 9/20/2003. I don't know how to show it like t3___ so this is the best that I can do. I also found on another site a message thread and somebody replied that it might be the IRQ for the card (normally) being used by something else.
