/etc/resolv.conf hardlink

Can /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/resolv.conf be a symlink or does it have to be a hardlink?

A symlink to what you posted as your subject? You can easily create a symlink, as it should work better for you, unless you state otherwise.
cd /etc
ln -s /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/resolv.conf
As I said before, unless you state otherwise, this will work for you.
