ok, heres the situation. im installing mandrake 10.1 onto a 25GB (give or take) partition with a 1.5 gig swap space. ive downloaded the isos. put them on disc...

put disc one in and reboot. change boot order so dvd rom is first (for some bizarre, reason, i cant put CD rom first but ill get to that in a sec). so i start her up and it gets hung up at loading memory. this is what the alt F4 looks like

the XXXXXs represent a number that just keeps going up and up and up as it tries new blocks. another thing, ive used google and looked around. i burned this disc at an insanely low speed (x5. before that, i tried x10).

then i tried redownloading and reinstalling, no go.

so i tried putting disc 2 in and then disc 1. ok, so it got its attention, going good going good, put disc one in, same error.

so i put disc 2 in again and tell it to load from CD(it gave me the option at the main linux screen) and put the disc 1 in the CD tray and i STILL got the same error

i have tried everything i can think of. someone please freakin help me or imma be on windows for a long time.

Don't know how to do it during a Mandrake installation, but disabling DMA acceleration during an installation will usually overcome the “bad sector” problem.

I usually see this problem with old CD drives, which probably need to be replaced. CD drives do eventually die.

You have a faulty disc. Burn the file to new disc and try it.

my CD drives arent that old and work perfectly fine on all other things. ill try the new CD, thats a tad cheaper.

Did you md5 it ??? - easy way to save a lot of angst.

the md5 thing didnt work. and i dont mean that as it failed to pass, i mean, it just did not work.

What didn't work? You should download a copy of the file ending .md5 and run md5summer against your download. If the numbers match, the download is good.

Ahhhh - maybe I see the confusion. I just went and had a look at the LQ download page (which I must admit I don't usually use).
There is nothing there to suggest such a thing as a md5 exists, let alone a link to go get it. Other download pages may be similar.

Sticktendo go to a mirror of choice, and find the directory containing the .iso you downloaded. There you'll also find a file of the same name, but with .md5 added at the end. This will be just a few bytes - say 60 or 70.
Download that as well to the same directory as the iso, then run the md5summer.

BTW, you should do this with any .iso you download if the md5 is available.

The link I posted was to a how to. All iso download pages should have a copy of the iso and a copy of the md5sum. If they don't, download from somewhere else.

welll, i got it installed. i just tried a CDR (instead of my cdrws) and at a different speed yet again and it worked. thanks for typing all of that up anyway ^_^;

well, now my problem comes to urmpi. right now, i totally like in a media player. for some weird reason, the one that comes with mandrake wont work at all anymore. and for a while i couldnt reach my media (i have 3 main partitions on 2 harddrives. linux, windows, and one that has no OS. purely media. and for some WEIRD reason, the media one was completely locked down but i could access the windows one. well, long story short, just as i get to my media, the media player breaks and wine runs slow as heck and i cant get a dang thing to work other than firefox and gaim. so i was trying to use urmpi to get vlc player but i dont have a clue how to use that one either. AHHHHHHHHHHHH)

for urpmi:
go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ an follow the instructions. After doing this, you should be able to install additional packages via your mandrake control center -->software -->install.
Probably it would be a good idea to run the updates first -->mandrake control center --> software --> updates.
You can also install packages via shell by getting root and then typing "urpmi <package-name>".
