All the packages with 'el7' errors are incompatible with your CentOS 6 system. You need to remove any and all 'el7' software sources.

Here's the problem. Don't mix 6 and 7. (See bolded sections)

Okay; but then I just get the following, and nothing gets updated:

Code:
#yum --disablerepo=remi-php56 update
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, security
Setting up Update Process
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
No Packages marked for Update

Excellent. You have solved the immediate problem, and your system is up to date with the latest officially-supported PHP.

Now that you are no longer mixing el6 and el7 sources, you may proceed toward your goal of installing an unsupported PHP version, if you wish. And you've identified one "dead end" method that doesn't work, so you can eliminate that possibility and try something else. Good luck.

Yeah, right. Thanks for your help in getting that far anyway. (which is kinda where I was before I began this saga).

It was mindlessly following explicit directions from some site or other, advising I could upgrade PHP to 5.6 on CentOS-6 that got me into this mess. It's obviously possible to do, so if anyone wants to tell me how then feel free!

There are instructions for CentOS 6 on this site:

https://blog.remirepo.net/pages/Config-en

I haven't personally tested these instructions, and can't vouch for them, so proceed with caution.
