Error while Untarring a file.


tar: Error opening archive: Error reading 'AdminLog-25062011-1758.tar.gz': Is a directory --- This is the error that appears when i try untarring a file. Please suggest what could be possibly wrong and how can it be sorted.

Well it appears to be saying that you are trying to untar a directory. Does one exist with the same name as the file you are trying to process?

Question Solved :O

No.. that was the only file with that name. The weirdest part is that it worked fine after two minutes

What command did you submit for the extraction?

The Same one again!!.. tar -zxvf <filename> .. just that!!

hmmm .... well I am guessing the archive is corrupt, but curiously I cannot find reference to the error message you have shown, ie 'Is a directory' does not appear to be valid error output (that I can find)

As a note, in the future, you can try this:

file AdminLog-25062011-1758.tar.gz

That may give you some hints...

NO..though the Command worked, I still did not understand that error. It was the same command, same file and no other changes made. The First time it throws and error and the next time it works just fine!!!
