Error when starting X, please help

OK, hope this is in the right forum. I shall start from how it began, I run slackware 10.0 and gnome. Iwas installing some library dependencies for vlc and during this I noticed when attempting to move a folder to the empty basket i couldn't. Somehow my permissions had been changed. I decieded to reboot and I loged in. When i typed startx i got the error message

xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/khronus/.Xauthority

( at the time i thought it was just that and i tried various things like deleting the /.Xauthority file , this didn't work and later I read furthur down in the error and it mentioned

'couldn't lock /tmp/TX.0-lock' ( or something similar )

Anyway, with help from some others i have tried resetting permissions on /tmp resetting owners, and a few other things..so many i cant remember.
The current error message I get when going startx is:

khronus@jed:~$ startx
xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/khronus/.Xauthority
xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/khronus/.Xauthority
xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/khronus/.Xauthority
xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/khronus/.Xauthority
