error using startx command
 
hi its me again...the noob that has lots of questions... :)

i get this error when i typed startx in the terminal...

Fatal Server Error:

Server is already active for display 0
If this server is already running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again

when i press alt+F7 to bring back the GUI, it seemed that it hanged?

do you want to open a new X session from a current one?
If that's what you want to do you shoud do it like this
startx -- :1

I forgot to add that after you do that you should be able to switch with Ctrl+alt + F7 or F8

no, i just want my current X session restored.
anyway, that a great idea too, didnt know u can run another session of X. :)

try running in a different init level. Also try using Ctrl+Alt+[1-8]

a fatal error may be due to incompatibility with your video card (or misconfiguration). If you have an ATI or nvidia card (which should work anyway) get the drivers from their websites.
