Error: Unable to boot from CD
 

I have tried installing 2 different distributions (Lycoris, Mandrake) with the same results: After *successfully* completing the installation I'm prompted to remove the CD and reboot. When I do, I'm confronted with the message Error: Unable to boot from CD, and it just sits there looking stupid... Any advice??

Change your boot sequence in BIOS to boot from hd first

Did that already: My boot order is the following

ATA100 RAID
HD0
HD1
HD2
HD3

I'm anewbie to linux. Had d/l redhat image file. But the md5sum can't work for me. What proper filename should I change the image file to. Pls help

Is this RAID your primary drive? Change it back as it was before you put cdrom at the beggining...

What does not work? Do you get an error or just the sum is not correct? If it's the sum, you need to download again (transmissin problems).

HD0 is probably your boot device try putting this to the top of the list :)

I run on windows 98 command prompt. Am I doing the right thing.Pls advise.

Search md5sum on google.com and download it. It's one file executable. Also, you must have patience cuz it takes a LONG while to check a 650MB iso. Interestingly, linux does it faster.

I try using md5sum <filename>.iso but it give me bad command bad command or filename.

In Windows you need md5summer (www.md5summer.org). In Linux, md5sum is installed by default.

Not sure how the MD5 problem got in this thread ....

But with the original "Can't boot from CD" message, I going to assume that your hard drive is plugged into the ATA-100 controller (which shows up at the ATA100 Raid in the BIOS). I think the problem is here. Probably the boot loader did not get properly installed on your ATA100 hard drive because the loader program didn't correctly know about the ATA100 controller. Therefore, with no boot loader, the BIOS defaults to the CDROM, which it can't boot from either.

I don't have the solution here, but you should search & ask questions about booting on ATA100 controllers, and/or configuring bootloaders (grub or lilo) to corectly do this.
