error reading operating system
hello,
I have installed mandrake 10.0 on a partition that was too small. (my error) as I was in a loop that I could not get out, I restart my PC. now I have a error message saying error reading operating system. is anyone can help me. thanks Yvan |
download knoppix
www.knoppix.net ( i think, or try linuxiso.org) then boot that up from the cd, open a terminal and type in "fdisk /dev/hda" (if hda is your primary linux harddrive" then delete your mandrake partition if you have windows on there also, you have to use a windows boot disk and at the dos prompt (if u get one), type in "fdisk /mbr" this will then format the mbr to let you boot windows, then reinstall mandrake, if you so desire |
thank you sir,
then how can i do this back home, where my PC isn't working? is there any fdisk program that I could copy on a floppy and use? any other suggestion is welcomed. Yvan |
fdisk is part of the knoppix distro so if you follow the advice above you can use that to sort out your partitions.

Hello Komaniko,
If i follow your logic, then, how do i get to the internet and then download this huge file, if i am not able to load any operating system? This is why I was asking for a small program that I could put on a floppy, carrying it in my pocket from work and use it on my home PC. So i guess my real question is where can i get fdisk and download it. I couldn't find it with google. Thank you, Yvan |
if all you want to do is delete your partitions, you can download a windows bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
and put it on a floppy, then boot from the floppy and fdisk will be on there |
error loading oprating system
hello,
i tried fdisk and make the first partition active. it still does the same message "error loading operating system" i was able to boot from cd window 2000 pro, and have done fixmbr. i still have the same message. should i do fixboot? thank you |
if u dont have anything you need to save on your linux partitions, you might just want to reinstall, that might be the best thing to do
