error on log in preventing gnome from working properly

The following message appears on boot.
Could not look up internet address x1-6-00-0f-1f-5c-63-3e this will prevent gnome from working correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding x1-6-00-0f-1f-5c-63-3e to the file /etc/hosts. The choice is try again or log in anyway. I can log in but gnome is not working correctly. What does this mean and what can I do to solve the problem?

Is 00-0f-1f-5c-63-3e one of your network interfaces MAC addresses (ifconfig to find this out)? If so try adding "x1-6-00-0f-1f-5c-63-3e localhost" to /etc/hosts.
