Unhappy Error on boot

Ok, I had Gentoo Linux up and running pretty well with Gnome; however, when I rebooted it gave me an error part way through booting that says:

/sbin/rc: line 254 /etc/init.d/modules : No such file or directory

is there some way I can replace this file/directory (whichever it is)?
It lets me log in as root at that point, but I don't know what to do to fix the problem

Any help would be great,
Thanks

Welcome to LinuxQuestions

What was the last thing you did before you got this message?

Has it always given you this error?

Since I don't use Gentoo, I have to ask, what is on line 254 in the modules file? You can use Vi, pico, or something to edit this file to see what line 254 looks like

Check out my bookmarks below for a quick tutorial on Vi.

If you have pico you can do this at a prompt:
Code:
pico /etc/init.d/modules
Peace,
Whitehat

From what I can tell, I'm missing a file called modules ... the code in /sbin/rc at that point is a function called start_critical_service (the -> is at line 254)

start_critical_service(){
local reval =
-> source "/etc/init.d/${x}" || error "Failed to source /etc/init.d/${x}"
reval = $?
["${retval}" -ne 0] && return "${retval}"
start || eerror "Failed to start /etc/init.d/${x}"
retval = $?
}

is /etc/init.d/modules a generic file or is it spacific to the setup? And, if it's generic, any clue where I could find it?
