Selected the wrong grub line when booting Ho Windows. Now all I get is as per the subject above.

I can boot with the live risk as per instructions in other threads, but non of the code suggested seems to cut any ice. It seems my data is safe & sound - but I need to open Vista so that I can back up the data

What distro are you using, and what all do you have installed on your hard drive?

Most likely you need to reinstall and/or reconfigure grub. Are you using grub or grub2? I am guessing grub...

I highly recommend using super grub disk - I use it for all of my MBR problems.

If you say that you are ABLE to boot up the LIVE CD and are interested MAINLY in
getting the data out then,

1. Boot from the Live CD in the rescue mode.
2. Execute: (Login first to the root by sudo -s command)
Try rebooting and see if it helps?

3. If that doesn't help:
Try rebooting and see if it helps?

4. If it too doesn't help then, post the outputs of the following here, perhaps then someone might be able to help.
5. Also:

and that means when you start the computer you get the EXACT same error you mentioned?

and how did you find out that your data is safe? After booting from the Live CD, you got to the Desktop and
saw your data in Windows partitions?

Due to a change of my provider - hence a change of my email address, the subscription information (reminders) that LQ sends out re your posts was not reaching me.

I decided the data was not remarkable and re-installed 10,4 forming one large partition, deleting Vista and all the data.

I can buy (in Australia) Windows 7 very cheaply for $100 Aus. So that when I get round to that I will use virtual box and have Ubuntu as the host & Windows 7 as the guest. I had a great dislike for Vista anyway, so I am glad it has gone.

and are you sure that the softwares for which you wish to buy Windows 7, can't be run through Wine?

Not sure what you mean Anisha? But I was planning to use Virtual Box and not Wine. Your question "are you sure" is a good one though, because I am not sure - just going on conversations with other people.

Or do you mean that Wine is in someways better than Virtual Box and that therefore Wine should be preferred?

I meant that "most" of Windows applications can be run through Wine on Linux, then you won't have to buy that Windows 7.

Honestly it is completely your decision... I would personally use wine to run smaller programs, and Virtual Box to fully emulate a version of windows to run larger programs. That is just my two cents. But overall, you could just use either wine for your Windows programs/components, or find similar open source programs to the equivalent Windows programs you need to use.

Thank you - that is useful information. I have referred to the link - now I need to find out if it can run Office - especially Excel. food for thought
