What type of networking in the VM, NAT, bridged, should be bridged.

Is the sshd running in the VM? Do you know how to check that?

VMware default network is:

VMnet0 = bridged
VMnet1 = Host-only
VMnet8 = NAT

If you need two networks they should not be on the same subnet.

Are you actually entering in the PuTTy hostname box 192.168.1.101? You should be using 192.168.1.5

In PuTTy's hostname box you need to use the IP address of the linux server ( 192.168.1.5 ) instead of the IP address of Windows.
