Error loading Theme - Fedora - Gnome

I installed a new theme onto Fedora / Gnome and when I restarted my computer, I receive the following error:

"There was an error loading the theme GDM-Debian. Failed to load image '/usr/share/gdm/themes/GDM-Debian/welldeb.png': Fatal error in PNG image file: incorrect data check."

Obviously the png file is corrupt, but how do I change my theme back to the original. All i can do is press "OK" and it gives me the same error. I tried pressing "Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Backspace" to back out of the GUI, but it keep restarting Gnome and I can't get to the text login.

Is there anyway I can reset the login screen / theme in Gnome? Where does Gnome hold the configuration files for this sort of thing?

I am now having this exact same problem... Can someone please help??

phyzical 06-05-2004 02:59 PM

please... some one must know. i cant get into my system at all. :(

you could try copying the contents of a "good" theme into the folder for the "bad" theme, after deleting the contents of the "bad" theme. Not sure, but it's likely worth a try. Perhaps backup the bad theme with a different name first, just in case...

my themes are in /home/user/.themes/

note the perid before themes...

Good luck...

i cant get into the system at all... or at least i do not know how to get around the graphical greeter and go straight to a command prompt. it just sits there at the error message stated above....

jeffreybluml 06-05-2004 03:10 PM

ouch...

try doing cntl-alt-F1, and if that doesn't get you out of X and into a command prompt, try all the other function keys with cntl-alt...

Let us know if that gets you out of X and able to try the above fix...

Alright, well crtl-alt-F1 gets me to a standard text login... **whew** thanks. However, i tried renaming the bad file with the name of a good file and then backing up and deleting the bad file, but i get the same error. When I installed the new themes, the GUI for the graphical greeter wants you to install files in the form of filename.tar.gz. So i just renamed the .tar.gz file but that did not work. There must be something else i have to change inorder for GDM or whatever to look somewhere else for a login screen.

Also, how do you start a gnome xsession from the command line? I tried 'startx' but that didnt work. What is the command? If i could get into an xsession i could fix this. Thank you.

If I read correct, you said you renamed the bad one to a good one and deleted the bad one (after backup)...not quite what I was suggesting...

Try copying the folder (and all contents) of a good theme to the same directory but with the EXACT name of the folder that contained the bad theme. For instance, if you have a good theme called "Gorilla", then at the command line type:

cp -rfd /home/jeff/.themes/gorilla/ /home/jeff/bad_theme_name/

replace the jeff in the path with your username, obviously...

THen reboot.

Oh, and I'm sorry I don't yet know how to start x from a cntl-alt-F1 command prompt. I too cannot use startx, though I think we're supposed to be able to...

Still a newbie...sorry...

Keep us "posted"

ok... jeff... I actually did what you said, but i copied to the wrong location on my first attempt. so i did it again like you said above...

Then i restarted. Came to the same error message.... did ctrl-alt-F1 to get to text login... logged in as root and tried startx again. This time, however, startx worked just fine, and i have no idea why :/ ... but thigs are up and running again. Thnaks for your help!!! :) :) :)
