"Error loading (music) files into library"

Have just installed Ubuntu 6.06 and put a couple of known good mp3 files from my Windoze computer onto the desktop and attempted to listen to them. If I click on them and select "open with Rhythmbox", nothing happens.

If I try to import the file directly into Rhythmbox, it attempts to load it and fails, giving me the message

"Error loading files into library
(The following files could not be loaded)
The file is not an audio stream file"

Assuming a codecs issue, I ran the following in a terminal window:

wget -c
sudo dpkg -i w32codecs_20060611-1plf1_i386.deb

(as found at: [ ] under the heading:
[ Windows Codecs (w32codecs) ])

after running the command line was filled in with:

sudo dpkg -i w32codecs_20060611-1plf1_i386.deb

so I ran that and all seemed to go OK, but when I try to import the file again, I get the same message as above.

Apparently there is something yet to be done? Do I need to reboot? Any assistance appreciated

Agrouf, Thanks for yours. I had already seen this thread, but it applies to Warty Warthog 4.10 (I am using 6.06) and seems to apply to gstreamer rather than Rhythmbox.

Please confirm that this is also applicable to 6.06 and that gstreamer is a supporting software for Rhythmbox.

Also, I had used synaptic and tried to find gstreamer to see what versions are now available. There are 17 packages of gstreamer0.10 (most of which are already installed) and one package of totem-gstreamer (which is also already installed). The 2004 thread mentioned gstreamer0.8, which I assumed is a much later version than those that synaptic is showing me.

In a word that thread was more confusing to me than helpful, but any clarification on the above that you might provide would be gratefully received. I am a real newbie and find Linux overwhelming, but I am trying to learn and understand. Thanks again.

Also, I have examined every option in the synaptic manager and searched many times for the package gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, but cannot find anything. There seems to be no way to turn on the "universe" option (which was mentioned in the post, but there is no "options" button on my synaptic. Help.
