Error installing hal on my Gentoo

I'm running Gentoo 2.6.15-r7 and having some problems installing hal. It looks to me like the installer wants site-packages to be a file rather than a folder. So far I've tried reemerging python and uninstalling hal-device-manager (I thought there might be a conflict or something). I've also poked around the ebuild and py-compile, but I don't have enough experience with this to know what's wrong. Any help is appreciated.

Here's the last part of my build:

make[3]: Nothing to be done for `install-exec-am'.
test -z "/usr/share/hal/device-manager" || mkdir -p -- "/var/tmp/portage/hal-"
 /bin/install -c -m 644 '' '/var/tmp/portage/hal-'
 /bin/install -c -m 644 '' '/var/tmp/portage/hal-'
 /bin/install -c -m 644 '' '/var/tmp/portage/hal-'
 /bin/install -c -m 644 '' '/var/tmp/portage/hal-'
 /bin/install -c -m 644 '' '/var/tmp/portage/hal-'
../../py-compile: line 105: /usr/local/lib/python2.4/site-packages: is a directory
make[3]: *** [install-devicemanagerPYTHON] Error 126
make[3]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/hal-'
make[2]: *** [install-am] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/hal-'
make[1]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1

Take it from an ex-gentooist. This is not a place to file bugs in ebuilds. Try on gentoo project's bugzilla.

Sorry, I just dislike gentoo. This is an install script bug, wait, sync everyday and try in a week.

Ah, all right, wasn't sure if it was a bug or just something I did wrong. Thanks.
