Error installing alsa sound driver

I am kind of new to UNIX, but I was trying to install the alsa sound driver and I got the follwoing message after I did a
./configure --with-kernel=/usr/src/redhat

----------------------------------------------------------
checking for kernel version... The file /usr/src/redhat/include/linux/version.h does not exist.
Please, install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution
or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel
sources (default is /usr/src/linux).
----------------------------------------------------------

or when I run ./configure I get

----------------------------------------------------------
checking for directory with kernel source... /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/build
checking for kernel version... The file /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/build/include/linux/version.h does not exist.
Please, install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution
-------------------------------------------------------------

How do I install the package with the full kernal resources...I guess it is looking for a version.h file

Thanks
