Error in gcc while trying to run make

I've been using Linux for a while but I've never compiled any software from source. I get the following error while trying to run "make" to compile this (http:/ /kemulator.sourceforge.net) program:

acinclude.m4:2497: error: m4_defn: undefined macro: _m4_divert_diversion /usr/src/packages/BUILD/autoconf-2.59/tests/../lib/autoconf/functions.m4:1293: AM_FUNC_OBSTACK is expanded from...
acinclude.m4:2497: the top level
autom4te: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1
aclocal: autom4te failed with exit status: 1
make: *** [aclocal.m4] Error 1

I've tried updating some of the rpm packages of the compiler programs listed there but I still got the exact same results. What do I need to do? Any help would be appreciated.

My version of m4 was released almost a year after the last release of this program, so I doubt that's it unless there's some sort of reverse compatibility issue.

well you could try an earlier version and see if that was an old macro that was removed ( I wouldnt reaplace my current m4 just make a temporary m4 somewhere where it is easily removable and set your PATH to point to it before /usr/bin/m4)
